The services can be charged to your credit card, or withdrawn from your bank account via PayPal's secured links, and you control this process. Within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment, you enter your payment information at the web site, and within a few seconds both you and TalkDoctors will receive Email confirmation of the payment authorization. If TalkDoctors must cancel the appointment prior to service delivery, then the charges will be credited back to you. If you cancel the appointment within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment time, then you will be responsible for the full amount. All payment information is secured through the PayPal link.

TalkDoctors was founded by Dr. Paul David Kai'makani'mele Swigart, also known as Dr. Kai. Dr. Kai is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Hawaii, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California, a Certified Employee Assistance Professional, and a Substance Abuse Professional in accordance with Department of Transportation and Safety Guidelines (49 CFR Part 40). He has been a licensed therapist since 1988. Dr. Kai is also a trained mediator and substance-abuse interventionist. In 2005, he was ordained as a non-denominational minister.

Dr. Kai has a Ph.D. in psychology from United States International University, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a B.S. in Psychology from Illinois State University.

Dr.Kai is a member of a variety of professional associations. He is a clinical member of American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, American Association of Christian Counselors, Employee Assistance Professionals Association, and the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders. He has served on governing boards, including functioning as president of the San Diego county chapter of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association for two terms.

Dr. Kai has also functioned as a fully credentialed psychologist for the U.S. Air Force, credentialed through the Department of Defense; and has worked on Johnston Atoll, a remote Pacific island, providing the full range of psychological services to military and non-military personnel. He provided services ranging from critical incident stress management of shark attacks to island fever while serving in this unique role.

Dr. Kai also provided faith-based critical incident stress management, trauma recovery services, and community support for the 31 October 2003 shark attack in Hawaii, where he lived at this time.

Dr. Kai is accustomed to working in conjunction with clergy, and welcomes the collaboration. Many of his referrals come from local clergy, and he enjoys serving God and the community through such pastoral networking.

When Dr. Kai was preparing to move from San Diego to the Pacific Islands, he explored creative methods for continuing to work with those clients seeking his continued guidance. Most clients informed him that they would like to continue either by phone or E-mail. And, then one evening, an 11 year old boy came in and said "I sure love coming to see my TalkDoctor!" He explained that this was what his mother called counselors. The name stuck. So TalkDoctors, the phone and E-mail counseling service was born...through the vision of transition and the inspiration of a child!

Dr. Kai is himself legally blind and has transformed this obstacle into a blessing in his life. It has become his greatest gift, and source of inspiration and motivation for those he works with. Dr. Kai is also a songwriter, poet, and speaker who claims faith as his greatest strength.
